How do you spot a wind damaged roof?
Start from the ground. Walk the whole yard first: shingle tabs, ridge cap pieces, and drifts of granules near downspouts all point up. Then scan every slope with binoculars and look for these signs:
- Dark rectangles where missing shingles expose the underlayment
- Tabs flipped back, wrinkled, or creased in a horizontal line
- Ridge caps cracked or gone at the peak
- Flashing bent away from chimneys and walls
- Gutters pulled loose or dented by debris
Inside the house, check ceilings and the attic after the next rain. A fresh stain means water already found a path, and paths only get wider with every storm that follows.
Where does wind hit a roof first?
Wind does not press down on a roof; it pulls up on it. The wind research behind the IBHS FORTIFIED Roof program shows the suction is strongest along the edges: the eaves, the rakes, and the ridge. Corners take the worst load of all. That is why storm calls so often start with a strip of shingles gone along one edge and the rest of the roof looking untouched.
Age matters too. Shingles hold against gusts through their sealant bond, and that bond gets brittle over the years. A gust that slides over a five year old roof can strip a twenty year old one.
Watch the creased tabs most of all. A shingle that folded back in the wind and flopped down again looks fine from the street, but the crease broke the mat and the sealant bond. Those tabs tear off in the next storm, and they are the damage adjusters miss when nobody gets on the roof.
