Architectural shingles vs 3 tab: what is the difference?

Architectural shingles are thicker, laminated in two layers, rated for higher wind and carry longer warranties. 3 tab shingles are a single flat layer, lighter and cheaper, with one repeating shape. Most Treasure Valley homes get architectural shingles now. We install 3 tab shingles mainly for matching repairs on older roofs.

What is a composition roof?

A composition roof is another name for an asphalt shingle roof. The shingles are composed of a fiberglass mat, asphalt and a top coat of mineral granules. So composition shingles, asphalt shingles and architectural shingles all describe the same family of products, layered over underlayment on your roof deck.

The parts of a shingle are simple: the fiberglass mat gives strength, the asphalt sheds water, and the granules block UV and carry the color. When granules wash off, the asphalt underneath ages fast. That is why granule checks matter at every inspection.

How to pick roof shingle color?

Start with your HOA rules, then your siding and brick tones. Dark shingle color hides streaks and reads classic; lighter tones reflect more summer sun. Drive your own street and photograph roofs you like. We bring sample boards and can point you to nearby homes wearing each color.

A note on samples: a shingle color that looks charcoal on a small board can read almost black across a whole roof, and a weathered wood tone shifts with the light through the day. Look at boards outside, at noon and near sunset, against your actual siding. Ten minutes in real light beats an hour with a catalog.

What is the minimum pitch for shingles?

Most shingle makers set 2:12 as the minimum shingle pitch. From 2:12 up to 4:12, installs need special low-slope underlayment steps. Below 2:12, shingles are the wrong product, and a membrane like TPO does the job instead. We measure your pitch during the free inspection and quote the right system.

Low-slope sections over porches and additions are common in the valley. We pair shingle fields with TPO on the flat sections so every plane gets the right material. Prefer standing seam? Compare metal roofing before you decide.
