What is a composition roof?
A composition roof is any roof covered with asphalt shingles. The word points to the recipe, not a brand. Each shingle starts with a fiberglass mat. The mat gets coated in asphalt for waterproofing, then topped with mineral granules that block UV light and give the shingle its color.
If your home has shingles, you almost surely have a composition roof. The next question is which kind of composition shingle sits up there, and that answer changes the price, the warranty, and the look of the whole house.
The parts of a shingle
Every asphalt shingle shares the same core parts of a shingle:
- A fiberglass mat that gives the shingle its strength
- Asphalt coating on both sides that keeps water out
- Mineral granules on top that take the sun’s abuse
- A sealant strip that bonds each course to the next in warm sun
- A nailing zone where the installer drives the fasteners

How do composition shingles compare to 3 tab shingles?
3 tab shingles are one style of composition shingle. Each one is a single flat layer with two slots cut into it, so it reads as three small tabs on the roof. The result is a flat, uniform grid pattern. 3 tab shingles cost the least, weigh the least, and carry the shortest warranties and the lowest wind ratings in the asphalt lineup.
They ruled Treasure Valley rooftops for decades. These days, most builders and reroof crews have moved past them for anything but matching repairs.
You can spot the difference from the curb. A 3 tab roof reads as a flat, repeating grid of identical rectangles. An architectural roof breaks that grid with staggered shapes and shadow lines. Once you see it, you will start sorting every roof on your street into one column or the other.
Why architectural shingles win on most Idaho homes
Architectural shingles, sometimes called laminated or dimensional shingles, bond two layers of material into each shingle. The double layer adds weight, depth, and a shadowed, dimensional look that reads like wood shake from the street.
The practical wins matter more than the looks:
- Higher published wind ratings than 3 tab
- Longer manufacturer warranties
- Thicker material over the nailing zone
- Better hail and impact performance in most lines
