What to know
Is a metal roof worth it in Idaho?
For many Idaho homes, yes. Steel panels shed snow, stand up to wind and shrug off summer sun. The trade is a higher up-front price than shingles for a longer service life. If you plan to stay in the house for decades, the math tends to favor metal.

How long does a metal roof last?
Across the industry, 40 to 70 years is a typical range for steel panel roofs, and standing seam systems sit at the top of it. That is typical performance, not a warranty. Coating, panel style, install quality and exposure all move the number. Shingle roofs run far shorter.
Factory finishes matter here. Quality paint systems on steel panels resist fade and chalking for decades, and the finish warranty comes from the coil maker in writing. We only quote panels whose finish paperwork we can hand you.

Is a metal roof louder in rain?
Not on a house. Modern metal panel roofing goes over solid decking and underlayment, which soak up sound the way an open-frame barn roof never could. Most owners say rain sounds about the same as it did on shingles. Attic insulation quiets it further.
The noise myth comes from pole barns and carports, where panels span open framing with nothing underneath. A house adds decking, underlayment, an attic and insulation between the steel and your ears. If quiet matters to you, ask to stand inside one of our finished metal roofs during a rainstorm. Owners say yes more often than you would think.
In practice
Does a metal roof shed snow?
Yes. Smooth steel panels let snow release and slide instead of piling deep, which cuts the load your framing carries through winter. Snow shedding needs planning, though: we place snow guards above doors, walkways and gas meters so a slab never lets go over someone’s head.
Shedding helps with ice dams too. Ice dams form when melting snow refreezes at a cold eave and backs water up the roof. A slick steel surface gives that cycle less to hold onto, and the high-temp underlayment beneath the panels adds a second line of defense at the eaves. Good attic ventilation finishes the job by keeping the whole deck closer to one temperature.

Can you put a metal roof over shingles?
Often, yes. Metal is light, so many roofs can take panels over one shingle layer on furring strips or a synthetic slip sheet. Some cities want a tear-off first, and permit rules vary. We check the decking, the layers and your city’s rules before quoting either path.

Metal asks little of you, but not nothing. Once a year, and after any big wind event, have someone check the trim, the sealant at penetrations, and the gaskets on any exposed fasteners. Keep valleys and gutters clear so water and slush move off the roof instead of sitting on it. Never let a satellite installer or a solar crew screw through a panel without a flashing plan in writing.
