Question
What does GAF Master Elite mean?
Master Elite is the top tier of GAF’s contractor program. The requirements are GAF’s, the decision is GAF’s, and the listing lives on GAF’s own site rather than the roofer’s. That is the part worth holding onto: it is one company vouching for another, which carries more weight than a roofer describing itself in its own words.
It is the tier that lets a contractor offer GAF’s Golden Pledge warranty. The terms of that warranty are published by GAF and GAF can change them, so read them at the source rather than trusting anyone’s summary, this page included.
The process
How to read the GAF Master Elite contractor list
The badge on a website proves nothing. Anyone can put an image on a page, and plenty of companies do. The directory is the check.
- Search the manufacturer’s own directory. GAF publishes its contractor directory on gaf.com. Search the company name, not the badge.
- Check the address. A listing for a company with a near-matching name in another state is not the company in front of you. Bork’s listing shows 1475 N Hornback Ave, Star, ID 83669.
- Ask which tier. A GAF certified contractor (GAF’s entry-level tier) and a Master Elite contractor are not the same thing. Certification has tiers, and the tier is the claim.
- Check the state separately. Idaho registers roofing contractors rather than licensing them. Ask for the RCE number and look it up.

That is the list, and it stops there. Bork installs Malarkey, Owens Corning, IKO and Boral products, and none of those is a certification Bork claims. Certification is one item on a longer list of what to check before hiring a roofer. A roofer naming a manufacturer it buys from is telling you about its supply, not its credentials, and those two get blurred often enough to be worth separating yourself.
What to know
Why should I check a roofer’s certification at all?
A roof is hard to inspect after the fact. The underlayment, the ice and water barrier, the flashing and the nailing pattern are all buried under the covering the day the crew leaves, and whether they were done right shows up years later as a stain on a ceiling. Certification is one of the few signals available before that.

Registration is a different thing again
Idaho does not license roofing contractors. It registers them, through the Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses. Bork Roofing’s registration is RCE-6110.
Homeowners ask about a licence, since that is the word used everywhere else. The honest answer here is that a roofer working in Idaho should be registered and insured and should hand over both numbers without being pushed. A manufacturer certification sits alongside that and replaces neither of them.

What does the certification do for my warranty?
Two kinds of cover come with a roof. Product cover comes from the manufacturer. Installation cover can come from the roofer, and on GAF’s stronger warranties some workmanship cover is backed by GAF rather than left with the contractor, which is much of what the tier buys. Read the terms at GAF.

What the tiers underneath it are
GAF’s program has more than one level, and the wording on a website rarely makes that clear. A GAF certified contractor sits below Master Elite, and a company can describe itself as GAF certified when it holds a lower tier than the one a homeowner assumes. That is not dishonest on its own, and it is worth knowing which is which.
The practical version is simple. Ask the roofer to name the tier, then look the company up in the directory and read what GAF says. If the two answers match, the question is settled. If a company will not name a tier, that is an answer too.
The same logic runs through the other manufacturers. CertainTeed runs a contractor program with its own names and its own levels, and it publishes who holds them.
Warning signs
What Master Elite does not tell you
It is a statement about the company, not about your job. It says GAF was willing to put the company in its directory under its top tier. It does not promise a particular crew on a particular Tuesday, and no certification does.
That is why it belongs next to the other checks rather than instead of them: the written quote, the workmanship term, the insurance certificate, and whether the company answers the phone before you have signed anything. Certification narrows the field. It does not pick for you.
